Thankfully, my wonderful husband, Matthew, fits all the above. ESTHER MA The best dates are spent with my husband, Harvey. We share the same passion in wine and great food, and he keeps the conversation flowing. And he isn’t afraid to be the first to leave so we can get a good night’s sleep. RUTH CHAO Anyone with a witty sense of humour, someone who you can talk to about the most mundane of things but also on topics that go beneath the surface. From high-wattage personalities to business heavyweights, distinguished philanthropists to society darlings, close to 400 of Hong Kong’s great and good came to show their support for the magazine at the annual Tatler Ball, long one of the city’s most glamorous events. COCKTAIL HOUR Photographers lined the red carpet leading to the Grand Hyatt’s ballroom to capture the arriving guests, who posed against a striking “40” logo before following the carpet to the cocktail reception. The duo came up with their brand name after listening to a song that had the word “sunny” as a refrain, and the joyful adjective has come to define much of their design aesthetic. Sunnei’s clothes are youthful and classic but laidback—the perfect embodiment of “Sprezzatura,” an Italian word meaning “studied carelessness” when applied to describing art and literature, and “effortlessly cool” in the context of fashion. In Rizzo and Messina’s collections, this translates into fuss-free silhouettes, experimental fabrics and playful lines, all of which feel right at home in the modern gentleman’s wardrobe. This isn’t merely trendy fashion, mind: the designers have become known for…1 分Tatler Hong Kong|November 2017Shangri-La on ShowA white velvet catwalk laid upon a suspension bridge at the mouth of a tunnel emerging from a mountain. There are photo opportunities, and then there’s Louis Vuitton Cruise. Once a year, the French maison famed for its luxury travel accessories invites 600 top-spending clients, senior editors and influencers from 25 countries to pack their LV-monogrammed luggage and journey across the globe for the annual spectacle of its Cruise show. These collections tend to be more glamorous than those for other seasons (after all, who needs a sensible woolly jumper on a superyacht?), and they are designed to cater to a super jet-set crowd. With the haute monde’s most well-travelled in the audience, the show locations have become increasingly fabulous and far-flung. For fashion editors, an invitation to a Louis…4 分Tatler Hong Kong|November 2017My Beauty Picks MARIA HATZISTEFANIS“Beauty has a lot to do with internal confidence, but taking care of your skin and body with a healthy diet is also very important” Where do you find inspiration? On Instagram. I get makeup and skincare ideas from beauty bloggers I follow. But I also love browsing magazines. Books are big sources of inspiration too—so much so that I’ve written one as well, How To Be An Overnight Success. What is your skincare regimen? I like a serum in the morning. I mix our newly launched Rose Gold Serum with an SPF50. That’s my day cream. What is the best beauty advice you’ve ever received? If you’re feeling down, treat yourself to a professional blow-dry. If your hair looks good, everything will follow. Who are your beauty icons?…1 分Tatler Hong Kong|November 2017Watch MenHaving grown up in southern California and then moved back to Hong Kong around the same time in the 1990s, Winston Koo and Carson Chan are living what some would consider parallel lives. They’ve both established themselves in their fields, have a lot of friends in common, and share a passion for collecting watches. Winston is “the definitive gentleman,” according to Carson. “He’s soft-spoken, always polite, well-mannered and constantly looking out for his friends. He’s always stylish and has impeccable taste. If he hosts a party, you don’t want to miss it.” Unsurprisingly, given his penchant for looking sharp, it’s the aesthetics of a watch that first attracts Winston. Once he finds one he likes visually, he begins his research. “I learn as much as I can about the piece…7 分Tatler Hong Kong|November 2017L’ Atelier Cindy Yeung High Jewellery Collection: Forging New Trends and Classics in the World of JewelleryMasterpieces of Superb Craftsmanship Founded in 1942, Emperor Watch and Jewellery has a storied history of creating unforgettable jewellery pieces with outstanding creativity and craftsmanship. And that certainly seems to be working for her, given that she’s built Lala Curio, one of Hong Kong’s most successful interior design and furnishing brands, from scratch in less than five years. We’re sitting in the salon of Laura’s first Lala Curio outlet, in the Star Street neighbourhood of Wan Chai—her fort, she calls it—sipping tea from beautiful ceramic cups. The store is divided into several dreamy rooms, treasure troves of curiosities spanning contemporary furnishings inspired by 18th-century Chinoiserie, slipper sofas upholstered in vintage obis (traditional Japanese sashes), and embellished hand-painted wallpaper (the forte of the Lala brand). The overall aesthetic is…9 分Tatler Hong Kong|November 2017TAKE THE WHEELJOSEPH FUNG, HONG KONG The director of architectural and design firm SP2 recalls taking a Ferrari 275 for a spin around the Italian countryside One of my favourite road trips was Ferrari’s 275 Tour in 2004, a six-day, 1,670km drive to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the release of Ferrari’s famous 275 model. Ferrari fans from around the world came for the drive, with more than 50 275s taking part. The drive started and ended at the Fiorano Circuit in Maranello, where Ferrari tests all its cars. We gathered at the track on the first day, soaking up the atmosphere and admiring all the 275s. After that, we visited the Ferrari factory and museum. The drive follows roads that the marque used to test the 275 in the 1960s, so…9 分Tatler Hong Kong|November 2017FEED YOUR MINDTHE ART AND MINDFULNESS OF SHOJIN CUISINE WITH MASTER TANAHASHI Dates: November 20-22 Prior to dinner, Master Tanahashi will demonstrate the meditative art of sesame grinding as part of the shojin practice. Part spiritual trek, part photographic mission, this journey began at the feet of the Egyptian pyramids, then continued to Stonehenge in England, Palmyra in Syria and, eventually, to Angkor Wat. But when Izu reached Cambodia in 1995, he found himself getting sidetracked. He was trying to focus on photographing the country’s spectacular temples, yet all he could think about were the thousands of ill and impoverished children around Siem Reap. How had so many children been maimed by landmines? Why were so many of them suffering from preventable diseases? When Izu visited a local hospital to find out more about the humanitarian crisis facing the country, he stumbled on a father who couldn’t…3 分Tatler Hong Kong|November 2017Wonder WomenA performance by Indian singer Toshi Sabri and a runway show by Indian fashion designer Manish Malhotra were just two of the highlights of this year’s Hong Kong Indian Women’s Club diamond anniversary gala dinner, which took place in the ballroom of the Four Seasons. The gala, themed around the famous Indian diamond that graces the British crown jewels, the Kohinoor, also included a live auction, which raised more than HK$3 million for Habitat for Humanity. The funds will benefit poor families in India and Mainland China. From the rare 1938 Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic worth about US$40 million to the highly coveted 1960 Ferrari 250 GT Spyder, Lauren’s cars have been featured at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and were the centrepieces of the Louvre’s automobile exhibition in Paris in 2011. His car collection has long influenced his designs. Lauren has often taken inspiration from the streamlined curvature of modern cars to create classic womenswear silhouettes, so it made sense that he opened his garage in Bedford, New York, to serve as the backdrop of his Fall 2017 runway show. The male…1 分Tatler Hong Kong|November 2017In His ShoesA wall of colourful shoes was the focal point at a Christian Louboutin party to celebrate the arrival of the shoemaker’s latest men’s sneaker, the Aurelien. Guests enjoyed mini pizzas served in Louboutin pizza boxes and ice treats from a customised pop-up gelato cart, the evening taking inspiration from Florence, where the Aurelien sneaker made its debut at Louboutin’s bike polo tournament during Pitto Uomo.…1 分Tatler Hong Kong|November 2017Mix and MatchRoger Vivier invited three chic and fashionable personalities—Kathy Chow, Amanda Strang and our fashion director, Justine Lee—to select looks from their wardrobes that reflect their own distinct styles, and match them with shoes and bags from the brand’s new autumn/winter collection. The food is all vegetarian and it’s amazing, with influences from around the world. The flavours are so clear and transparent. A perfect spot for lunch or dinner. 3 LONG ISLAND BEACH HOUSE…2 分Tatler Hong Kong|November 2017More Boom, Less Bust“We believe prices may potentially increase a further 15 per cent over the next two and a half years” Hong Kong remains one of the most expensive cities in the world for residential real estate. Property prices show no sign of easing up and market watchers are not reporting a slowdown. A widely-anticipated bubble crash, expected to mirror that of 1997, has not materialised either. The government has done what it can to cool the market by pulling on the regulatory reins, yet house prices “have surged by 20 per cent over the past year,” says investment management company JLL. Despite the possibility of rising interest rates, combined with ongoing geopolitical instability and increased supply, there is little to indicate a market crash is imminent. Demand from owner-occupiers remains robust.…5 分Tatler Hong Kong|November 2017GO GLOBALMIAMI US PALAZZO DEL SOL Beautiful Fisher Island is a 216-acre man-made isle just three miles outside Miami. Once a private residence for the Vanderbilt family, the island has passed through a number of hands over the decades, including, in the 1960s, a development group that counted former US President Richard Nixon among its members. Today, it is considered one of the US’s most coveted luxury enclaves—its zip code ranks amongst the wealthiest in the country—both for its exclusivity and world-class accommodations and facilities. Only accessible by boat, the tropical oasis is home to some 700 families, an elite composed of athletes, entertainers, CEOs and billionaires. The newest construction project on the island is Palazzo Del Sol, a 10-storey, three-part complex of 47 boutique residences with three to seven…7 分Tatler Hong Kong|November 2017WHAT ARE CRYPTOCURRENCIES?Cryptocurrencies are digital currencies that use cryptography to secure transactions and the minting of new units of the currency. Bitcoin was the first to be created, when an anonymous individual known as Satoshi Nakamoto published the underlying technology in 2009. Many other cryptocurrencies have been introduced since then, but the general principle behind most of them is the creation of a decentralised digital currency that allows strangers to conduct anonymous transactions on the internet without needing to trust each other. At the heart of these currencies is a secure database (such as the so-called blockchain that bitcoin uses, for example) that records and timestamps all transactions. This allows all parties to verify and validate a transaction—and by itself is a technology that has many potential applications in traditional financial services,…2 分Tatler Hong Kong|November 2017Passport to a Luxury LifeThe prospect of hassle-free travel and the opportunity to pay less tax have long encouraged the world’s wealthy to acquire new passports. Some long-term US expats are even choosing to give up American citizenship to avoid double taxation. Agents and intermediaries who facilitate such applications say the number of countries offering second-passport schemes is on the rise, as governments scent a market opportunity, respond to a financial crisis or, in some cases, both. Says Veronica Cotdemiey, CEO of Citizenship Invest, which has offices in Dubai, Hong Kong and Singapore, “We have clients from all over Asia, including Japan, Vietnam, Indonesia and China. Everywhere, in fact, except Singapore. There are numerous advantages to having a second passport, and their relative importance generally depends on where you come from.” Countries are constantly…5 分Tatler Hong Kong|November 2017Making an ImpactIMPACT INVESTINGEthical investing used to be about leaving things out—chiefly, not investing in companies that don’t cut the sustainability mustard. But the recent advent of impact investing—the term was only coined in 2007, by the Rockefeller Foundation—takes it a stage further by focusing investment specifically on projects that are going to have a positive impact, most commonly on individuals and society, the environment, or both. James Gifford, chief investment officer for impact investing at UBS Wealth Management, who was also the founding executive director of the UN-supported Principles for Responsible Investment, defines impact investing as “the subset of broader ESG [environmental, social and governance] investing where you can demonstrate a concrete impact”. Impact investing remains for the most part an illiquid, private equity or venture capital arrangement. It’s dominated by…3 分Tatler Hong Kong|November 2017Is This a Bubble?Expect a market correction of quite large proportions either this year or next year Even the threat of nuclear war can do little to dent the irrepressible rise of stocks these days. In the 12 months to mid-September, most major world stock markets have had a very good run. The S&P 500 is up over 17 per cent, the Hang Seng Index almost 20 per cent, Japan’s Nikkei is up 23 per cent and the regional index MSCI Asia Pacific has put on more than 18 per cent. Don’t be fooled, though; trees don’t grow to the sky and when people start asking if this is the “new normal” for asset valuations, it’s time to look for the exit door. We have been here before, several times over the past…3 分
Tatler Hong Kong|November 2017We Are FamilyHow was the Hong Kong Tatler Ball? It’s the question I’ve been asked repeatedly since we threw our incredible 40th anniversary party at the Grand Hyatt. Although it was the biggest and most spectacular event in the magazine’s four decades of history, I find myself remembering the night as wonderfully intimate—like a family wedding. Our family are the Tatler community who have graced our pages over the years, and when we are all united under one roof, the spirit of Hong Kong ignites in full force. The many months of insanely stressful planning suddenly seemed worth it when Sister Sledge’s We Are Family kicked in and several generations of Hong Kong’s most powerful and prestigious families threw their hands in the air and started singing along. And yes, it was…2 分Tatler Hong Kong|November 2017FOOD FORTNIGHTSince 1984, Hong Kong Tatler has published the region’s leading restaurant guide for serious culinary connoisseurs, and since 2013 we have been hosting an annual awards night to celebrate the crème de la crème of the food and beverage sector. This year, we’re taking things further with the rebranding of the guide, which will be relaunched as T.Dining Hong Kong—a new lifestyle publication that will feed the mind with serious food writing, authoritative restaurant and bar reviews, and contributions from leading voices in the dining community. T.Dining will be launched on the evening of November 16 at the annual Best Restaurants awards cocktail party, held at newly minted Kerry Hotel in what is currently the city’s largest ballroom. Preceding the awards, a series of exclusive dining experiences will take place…2 分Tatler Hong Kong|November 2017BALL SO HARDAlan Lo #Selfie #StrikeAPose Each guest at this year’s ball was given a selfie light and Alan couldn’t resist trying his out. We’ve all been there. Thankfully, the winter warrior has received a more practical update this season courtesy of Anthony Vaccarello at Saint Laurent and the creative team at Isabel Marant. With a slouchy silhouette, the boot allows the fabric to scrunch up near the ankles, and is roomy enough to tuck your skinny jeans or leggings into. Since Alessandro Michele took the helm, the Italian label has literally stopped traffic in New York City (the 2016 show was on West 22nd Street) and taken over the cloisters of historic Westminster Abbey in London (2017). There was a hint early this year of Michele’s next Cruise destination when Gucci announced a partnership with Palazzo Pitti to restore Florence’s Boboli Gardens, an outdoor museum filled with Roman antiquities and sculptures from the 16th to 18th centuries. Sure enough, news followed that the 2018 Cruise collection would make its debut in Florence, the city where Guccio Gucci founded his label in 1921. The Cruise show…3 分Tatler Hong Kong|November 2017Cool ToolsTemptu Air by Temptu What it is: A travel-sized make-up airbrush. For some people, that means turning their minds to hymns and holly, for others it’s all about the mad dash to the shops to buy mince pies, champagne and presents, but for devoted party-throwers, it means the start of an organisational ordeal. If you’re in the latter category, instead of recycling the same old venue, why not dazzle your friends and family with something utterly original that people will associate only with you—and one that will take the ordeal out of organisation? At one time, the most desirable locations were The Peak, Southside and select areas of Kowloon Tong, and property here commanded lofty prices. Today, along with prime enclaves Deep Water Bay and Jardine’s Lookout, the new luxe locations of Kau To Shan and Tuen Mun are highly coveted. While these latest developments may seem far from Central, new infrastructure is creating exciting opportunities as discerning buyers look beyond traditional affluent addresses for more value and growth potentials. Located in hitherto untapped parts of Kowloon and the New Territories, these developments boast what most Hongkongers can’t usually get their hands on: detached houses, swathes of garden and greenery, plus a string of benefits that often includes private wine…8 分Tatler Hong Kong|November 2017Back to NatureWe all fantasise about a dream home that fulfils our every need, somewhere that is practical, stylish and close to rolling hills, trees and open water. So often in life, though, we have to compromise, making choices between, say, sweeping views or airy indoor space, great light or a location that’s close to nature, access to schools or access to public transport. There is, however, one area on Hong Kong’s Southside that ticks all the boxes: Deep Water Bay. Unlike neighbouring Repulse Bay, Deep Water Bay is not on the tourist trail. A sense of peace pervades this quiet district, which sits between dramatic mountains and the sea. As well as natural beauty, Deep Water Bay offers location, location, location: it’s close to Hong Kong’s best schools and country clubs,…3 分Tatler Hong Kong|November 2017East Meets WestFree-spirited urbanites, take note: New World Development has launched a new residential address in Western District. Bohemian House is the latest addition to the Artisanal Movement, drawing on the heritage of Sheung Wan and Sai Ying Pun’s vibrant qualities. The Artisanal Movement, a relatively new direction for New World Development conceived by its executive vice-chairman and general manager, Adrian Cheng, marks a shift away from the gaudy, ostentatious properties of Hong Kong’s past in favour of something sleeker and more sophisticated. Properties under the Artisanal umbrella are design-driven, craft-oriented spaces with bespoke details. Part of their appeal is their shared entertaining spaces, which cultivate a sense of community and connectedness with like-minded individuals. Each property is different: earlier this year, the premium brand launched Mount Pavilia in Clearwater Bay, with…2 分Tatler Hong Kong|November 2017CUTTING-EDGE BANKINGWealth today is more global than ever. Investment portfolios seek out opportunities in markets around the world, auctions in London or New York take bids from every corner of the planet, and the wealthy themselves are as comfortable in Hong Kong as they are in Sydney or Paris... However, few private banks have a footprint that is similarly international—equally capable in the US, Europe and Asia. One of the few is Citi Private Bank. Indeed, its roots in Asia are deeper than most so-called local banks. The group’s history in the region dates back to 1904. It has been in Hong Kong longer than the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, in Singapore longer than the Monetary Authority of Singapore. It has also been serving Asia’s wealthy longer than the rest of…4 分Tatler Hong Kong|November 2017Nurturing SustainabilityFlipping through photos on her phone, Jennifer Ting might be seated in a conference room in Hong Kong but her mind is thousands of kilometres away in the Borneo rainforest. Stopping at a picture of a wild orangutan, perched in a tree, HSBC Private Banking’s global head of marketing swells with excitement as she recalls her encounter with the critically endangered primate. It is a memory that she will not forget. Fostering this type of connection is the goal of the bank’s Next Generation Sustainability Leadership Programme—to immerse and deeply engage future business leaders in the front lines of sustainability issues, specifically climate change; to turn the abstract into the physical; and to bring home the message about why businesses need to adopt sustainable practices. HSBC launched an internal Global…5 分Tatler Hong Kong|November 2017At Your ServiceTo many wealthy individuals in Asia, who use private banks at a fraction of the rate of their counterparts in Europe and North America, it is common to question the value of wealth managers. While Asia is the world’s top region for wealth creation and mints a new billionaire every three days, according to the 2016 UBS global billionaire study, it lags the wealthy West in the use of such services. In 2015, the Asia-Pacific region surpassed North America for the first time in total wealth owned by the high-net-worth population, with US$17.4 trillion over North America’s US$16.6 trillion. But while eight out of 10 high-net-worth individuals (HNWI) in Europe or North America used private banking services, in Asia, the proportion was one in 10, according to a report by…4 分
Tatler Hong Kong|November 2017Hot StuffCover star Laura Cheung arrived full of enthusiasm on the dot of 10am for our shoot at New World Development’s new luxury residential development at Clear Water Bay. We headed straight into one of Mount Pavilia’s soon-to-open duplex apartments for hair and make-up, after which Laura changed into the first of many outfits from Chanel’s fall/winter collection—a heroic mission, as it was one of the hottest, stickiest days of the dying summer. With slicked-back hair and a broody lip, Laura looked remarkably fierce but also extremely relaxed. “I feel like myself,” she said. “I love an edgy look.” From structured bouclé grey jackets to Chanel’s signature tweeds in black, navy and grey, Laura wore a predominantly monochromatic palette, spiced up here and there by the brand’s space-inspired creations for the…2 分Tatler Hong Kong|November 2017GIRL POWERMore than 500 guests will descend on the JW Marriott Hotel on November 22 for the annual gala dinner of the Women’s Foundation, the pioneering non-profit’s flagship fundraising event. With the theme “Reflections on the last 20—and next 20—years: What progress for women’s advancement?,” this year’s event will pay tribute to female empowerment and the developments that have benefited women since the city’s handover in 1997. The evening will feature a dazzling array of live entertainment, sumptuous fare and a silent auction to aid research and community programmes for disadvantaged women and girls. The keynote address will be delivered by Anson Chan, Hong Kong’s first female chief secretary. Michael Bloomberg, the founder of Bloomberg Philanthropies, will also speak. They will emphasise the importance of STEM—science, technology, engineering and mathematics—education and…1 分Tatler Hong Kong|November 2017CLEAR AS DAYLABEL LOVER JUUN J Born and raised in South Korea, Jung Wook Jun graduated from the country’s leading fashion university, Esmod Seoul, and immediately began honing his craft at renowned fashion labels such as Club Monaco, establishing a strong foundation in classic tailoring. He founded his own label, Lone Costume, in 1999, and his debut at Seoul Fashion Week was followed by great success. His deftness at deconstruction and unusual silhouettes quickly garnered a cult following, and within eight years he launched Juun J at Men’s Fashion Week in Paris, becoming the first Korean to show on the coveted platform. His grasp of gender-neutral tailoring allowed the rising Korean star, who often credits Helmut Lang as his main inspiration, to develop his own approach to designing, a mix of high-end…1 分Tatler Hong Kong|November 2017BETWEEN THE LINESCan’t wait for Christmas? Neither can we. Luckily, you can start injecting some holiday cheer into your wardrobe with a hearty serving of the red checks and stripes that adorn some of our favourite outerwear this season. Worried that donning some bright rouge might come across as ostentatious? Fret not; Versace and Cerruti 1881 offer subtler alternatives in the form of oxblood jackets and red-and-black patterns that look right on trend in a more demure way. Finish up with black, tapered trousers and matching burgundy boots for extra sartorial points. DARE TO WEAR As temperatures drop and utilitarian coats come out, let your trousers take a turn in the (fashion) spotlight. From embroidered jeans to embellished sweatpants, casual comfort has never looked so cool. HAT TRICK Forget the beanie. Crimson or scarlet, velvety matte or glossy, a dab of lisptick is sometimes all you need to glam up a look and take over the world (or just have a jolly good time). This fall, double up on that power armour with the beauty trend spotted all across the FW17 runways—the two-toned pout. Think top lips in fiery oranges and bottoms in berry glosses, as painted by Yadim Carranza at Jason Wu to create an ever-so-subtle orange-red effect. Or emulate Val Garland at Giambattista Valli, who took vampy glamour to the next level with a blood-red ombré and ultra-shiny finish. At Andre Gn and Trussardi, gradient tints of dark plum and faded pink harkened…1 分Tatler Hong Kong|November 2017Into the WildBOUCHERON Raccoon ring set with diamonds, sapphires, onyx and wood; Husky ring set with an antique cushion-cut Burmese sapphire surrounded by diamonds, spinels and sapphires GRAFF Princess Butterfly sapphire secret watch; Parrots brooch set with multi-shape pink and white diamonds totalling 36.73 carats CHAUMET Bee ring set with pear-shaped and round mandarin garnets, a yellow sapphire and brilliant-cut diamonds; Bee brooch set with a pear-shaped blue-green tourmaline, round green tourmalines and brilliant-cut diamonds BULGARI Festa Italiana Palio di Siena Cavallo brooch encrusted with diamonds and set with onyx and an emerald; Serpenti Seduttori bracelet set with an oval-shaped blue sapphire, pear-shaped emeralds and pavé diamonds DIOR Mitza ring in yellow gold and set with diamonds and lacquer; Incroyables et Merveilleuses Hippocampe ring set with an amethyst, diamonds, Paraiba tourmalines, pink…2 分Tatler Hong Kong|November 2017SEEING RED“There is no coloured gemstone that fuels passion more than a ruby,” says author and jewellery specialist Joanna Hardy, who recently penned Ruby, a book commissioned by leading coloured gemstones supplier Gemfields. In this ambitious project, Hardy takes readers on a journey from the ancient mines of Burma, along the harsh terrain of the silk trading routes of China, to the most exciting recent ruby deposit discovered in Mozambique. She examines the extraordinary, ancient cutting and polishing techniques, before leading readers to historical courts and palaces where rubies have been sourced and bought from intrepid gemstone dealers by royalty, dignitaries and the social elite throughout history. During a stop in Hong Kong to launch Ruby, we take the opportunity to talk to Hardy to learn more about this magnificent red…3 分Tatler Hong Kong|November 2017ROYAL FLUSH“The difficulty a non-royal faces in marrying into the family is adapting to the goldfish bowl. There’s a fairly steep learning curve which can be easy or difficult depending on the bride’s upbringing” It’s the fairytale cliché. The prince or princess falls for a penniless commoner, love conquers all and they live happily ever after. But it turns out the stories we learned at our mother’s knee were light years ahead of reality. In the past few decades royal heirs and heiresses have been granted permission to choose their own mate; prior to that, crown marriages were powerful bonds based on allegiances, money and a palace-load of plotting. As the role played by royalty has evolved to fit with modern society, members of the younger generation have been able…7 分Tatler Hong Kong|November 2017WAY OF THE SHOJINIn 1987, a bored event planner at a global media group, Toshio Tanahashi, quit Japan’s corporate world at the age of 27 and became an apprentice in the kitchen of a nunnery in Shiga prefecture renowned for the high quality of its temple cooking. Some years later, he emerged from Gesshinji (Moon Heart Temple) well versed in shojin ryori, or shojin cooking, a sophisticated Buddhist culinary tradition that holds great cultural significance as a specific Japanese art. The word shojin, written with the Chinese characters for “polished” and “progressive,” originally described the Buddhist attitude of gladly and fully engaging in a wholesome activity, and its use became more widespread with the development of Zen in the 13th century. Shojin is vegetarian haute cuisine, with culinary techniques adopted from Song-dynasty China,…6 分Tatler Hong Kong|November 2017HEIGHTENED SENSESBob Dalgarno is a man obsessed. The object of his fixation is wood—or, to be precise, the oak casks in which The Macallan single malt whisky is matured. Dalgarno is The Macallan’s master whisky maker, and the world’s leading authority on the complex and transformative interaction between wood and spirit, the process that shapes what is often called “the Rolls-Royce amongst malts.” In 2015, he embarked on a journey of discovery, launching Edition No. 1, the first in an annual series of special limited edition releases of The Macallan to explore different aspects of that alchemy. “The driving force behind the Edition Series is the freedom we have to explore different and distinctive casks, some that might not typically be used in other The Macallan whiskies,” he says. Around 80…3 分Tatler Hong Kong|November 2017Gem of an EveningFawaz Gruosi, the founder and creative director of luxury Swiss jeweller De Grisogono, hosted a private dinner for a number of VIPs at Pierre in the Mandarin Oriental to celebrate the launch of The Art of De Grisogono, a pop-up exhibition at the hotel showcasing some of the brand’s finest jewellery and timepieces. A high point of the evening was the unveiling by Gruosi of The Art of De Grisogono Creation 1—a high jewellery necklace featuring a 163.41-carat diamond of flawless clarity that is to go under the hammer at a Christie’s auction in Geneva this month. THE INSIDER Fawaz Gruosi, the founder and creative director of De Grisogono, is a big fan of emeralds hence he designed The Art of De Grisogono 1 necklace with two rows of them…1 分Tatler Hong Kong|November 2017Cheers for a CauseA private wine dinner was hosted by Jacqueline Chow, Christina Kim and Charlotte Wong at Cipriani to benefit the Hong Kong Society for the Protection of Children. You might have a wireless baby monitor that lets you check in on your child while you are at dinner with friends. You might wear an Apple Watch that tells you the time, displays your texts, and tracks your fitness progress. You might even use Amazon’s hands-free, voice-controlled Echo speaker to play music wirelessly. The IoT is what powers these devices—an extended network of people, devices, appliances and applications that uses wireless technology to connect and speak to each other. These devices have a common goal: to make your life more convenient, more efficient, and generally happier than ever before. By reacting to your behaviour, and by speaking to you and to each…2 分Tatler Hong Kong|November 2017In The BagSabrina Fung-Lam hosted a cocktail party for family and friends in the Landmark Atrium to unveil Delvaux’s Les Miniatures Belgitude Exhibition—seven miniature versions of the brand’s signature Brillant bag each playfully representing a different Belgian city and its unique culture. Consisting of 38 apartments over 24 floors, with two apartments per floor, the luxury high-rise property is named after Spain’s renowned Cave of Altamira, “alta” being the Spanish word for high and “mira” the word for views. Looking out across Central and beyond in one direction and with unobstructed views of the mountains from the other side, Altamira stands out, literally. As the original home of Dr Wu, who came from a long line of bankers and was renowned as one of the tycoons of Hong Kong’s banking industry, his grandsons wanted to…4 分Tatler Hong Kong|November 2017Virtual MoneyThe value of a single bitcoin has risen by around 400 per cent this year, though exactly how much depends very much on which day you check. With such spectacular gains, high-net-worth individuals, institutional investors and investment banks are starting to take notice. Mainstream interest in digital currencies isn’t entirely new. Last year, the fintech community was abuzz with innovative uses for blockchain, the technology that underpins bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies (see sidebar). But none of its members showed much interest in the currencies themselves. The message was clear: blockchain was serious stuff for the grown-ups, while bitcoin was being dismissed as just another millennial fad, doomed to the same fate as fidget spinners and US$400 juicers. Indeed, some in the conventional financial community still have that view. JP Morgan…6 分Tatler Hong Kong|November 2017Elite BankingCitigold Private Client focuses on high-net-worth customers with investible assets of US$1 million to US$10 million, providing trusted advice, market intelligence, customised wealth management solutions and privileges that money can’t buy. It requires looking ahead to the rising generation of a family enterprise, engaging the family in charting the path and encouraging, training and then selecting the rising generation of leadership. The founding generation may find this unexpectedly challenging. It is no longer a question of simply deciding who will succeed them. Family business owners must change the culture of the family to balance the values of tradition with innovation and change. To do this, they need the active participation of all generations. For many Asian family enterprises, it is not uncommon for the senior generation to view the rising generation as unqualified or not ready to govern. Similarly, the rising generation may believe the senior generation will never relinquish their leadership positions. To manage governance…1 分
